For a while, an article has being boiling in me but I have refused to let it see the light of day because of it's funny title, CORRUPTION IS A NIGERIAN. How funny and embarrassing to a country that has the potential to be the greatest country in the world. Like doubting Thomas, I refused to believe this above title but an incidence happened recently that forced my thread into the tiny hole of this 'neddled-fact'.
The Nigerian Law School (NLS) Director-General, Prof. Olanrewaju Onadeko (SAN), said in the annual meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port-Harcourt that some Lawyers were caught writing examination for Law students. These Lawyers were so skillfull in the game of Corruption that Lawyer Ugochukwu Ukamba wondered how the culprits were able to beat the 'impregnable' security at the Law School.
Many Lawyers expressed their solutions to the examination malpractice issue but with all due respect, their solutions are vague and baseless. It is as baseless as cutting off the stem of a tree and expecting the tree to die when the root still resides in the ground.
Corruption is a complex program written in our DNA. It is so inscribed in our minds that it cannot be erased by structured education. It could be submerged, inactive, immersed but it still finds expression at any little opportunity. We blame the government for corruption but we the citizens are brand ambassadors of corruption. The country is at a standstill because of corruption but sadly, it's heartbreaking when you discover that the future have drank a double portion of corruption. The youths now see corruption as a normal way of life.
In the midst of these problems, the solution lies in changing the THINKING PATTERN of Nigerians because corruption is an idea and like Myles Munroe said in one of his books that, "An idea cannot be killed but can only be replaced by a better one"
How do we stop corruption? Your contribution is needed. Series continues tomorrow
